Red eye is a sign of inflammation (swelling). Following are some of the numerous conditions that can cause a red eye:

  • Dry Eye Syndrome
  • Infection
    1. Viral
    2. Bacterial
    3. Parasitic
    4. Fungal
  • Trauma (injury)
  • Allergic
  • Inflammation of the inside of the eye
  • Bleeding/blood pooling on the white part of the eye
  • Marijuana/tobacco use
  • Inflammatory conditions in the body (like rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Improper contact lens wear.
  • Inflammation of the eyelid margin or eyelash hair follicles (blepharitis)
